lisa firer design

Lisa firer established lisa firer ceramics in 1996. She expanded the business to become lisa firer design. lisa firer design was born in 2009 when ceramic artist Lisa Firer employed Rebecca Khusu and Hilda Njokwana as full-time studio assistants who execute Lisa’s designs and explore their own variations.

Vision:

lisa firer design is a ceramic design and production studio that works with the uniqueness that hand-built porcelain develops through the making and firing process. We slab-build textured and coloured hand-rolled porcelain: cut and reassembled, layered and reconfigured. Lisa’s designs reference fabric, patchwork and the process of sewing; paper and origami, embossing and de-bossing; light and layering.

Mission:

Our company recognises the increasing value of the handmade and is committed to the hand-made craft object in this world of cheap mass production. We feel that the mark and energy of the maker is transferred into the work, especially with something as tactile as clay, and are proud to contribute to the very important craft and design sector in South Africa.

lisa firer design currently works from a studio in Woodstock, Cape Town.

Products and Services:

We produce our own ongoing collections of lighting and vessels and in addition make bespoke work for a variety of clients including architects, interior designers and corporates.
