Maria Magdalena van Wyk is an Afrikaans girl from Port Elizabeth (South Africa) where she completed her Bachelor of Technology in Fine Art and Graphic Design (Cum laude) in 2010. She was named according to traditional Afrikaans naming customs: second daughter named after the paternal grandmother. She shares the name with her grandmother who is a skilled calligrapher and her two cousins. Maria moved to Cape Town straight after her studies to pursue a career in the art industry.
Her work seeks an elegant simplicity through a complex series of intricately hand drawn lines in black ink. There is a modern simplicity and timeless quality to each piece. Every work of art comes with a story explaining the process and what inspired it whether it is poetry, music or a moment from an ordinary life make extraordinary through lines of ink.
